WMHA Concussion Baseline Testing
Submitted By Josh Pinese on Tuesday, September 18, 2018
Windsor Minor Hockey Association is proud to announce an addition to our Travel Committee for the 2018/2019 Season, Dr. Sean Smith.Sean will hold the position of Director of Player Safety.

Over the last few months Dr.Smith with the assistance of the WMHA Board has designed a Graduated Return to Play Protocol for concussion injuries.

Sean has also completed Scat 5 Baseline Testing for our Bantam and Midget aged players. This has been made mandatory for these players by the WMHA Board of Directors. These baseline test will ensure that a player with a concussion will NOT return to the ice until they pass the Return to Play protocol.

Players will also need written medical clearance from the treating doctor clearing them to skate. Once completed, the player and parents will meet with Dr. Smith and the VP of Travel for approval to skate.

In addition, we have created a concussion testing card that all trainers will have at each team practice and all games. This will be in the trainer kits. The card displays simple test that all trainers have been instructed to perform.

They will document the results and send that card with the player to the Emergency Room or Medical Centre. This will help the treating doctor reassess the player and show any difference between results.

This protocol was featured on CTV news on Monday September 17th, 2018, see link below.
