An update on WMHA Travel tryouts from our VP of Travel

I would like to give an update on our travel program and tryout process.  Our board and travel committee have been working hard to organize pre-season dust the rust sessions.  These skates are included in registration and our tryout passport (for those players trying out).  We plan to host traditional travel teams from U9 (Novice) to U21 (Juvenile) as well as U8 and AE teams.  The reality of hosting AE (additional entry) teams comes down to registration enrolment.  We have been proactive in promotion and transparency regarding our intentions for this season.  If our registration numbers support AE programming we will host teams at each division that can sustain house league and AE.  Please spread the word that registration is open and active.

Explanation of registration, intent to tryout and AAA permission to skate:

All travel players, regardless of where they were rostered in 2020-2021, are required by Hockey Canada to register with their home Center.  This is for insurance purposes, with tryouts in the Fall, insurance from the previous season no longer applies as it does with spring tryouts.  This includes players that were rostered to AAA last year who should be registering with WMHA.  Players rostered to AAA for 2019/20 can contact [email protected] for manual registration.

Any player trying out for AAA, AA or AE must register for WMHA, buy a tryout passport and fill out the intent to tryout form here. (The only exceptions are players rostered to AAA in 2019-2020: they will pay for their tryout passport if they are cut and released from AAA.  Those players should still register and complete the intent to tryout form).  NRPs (non resident players) are welcome to tryout, they are only required to fill out the intent to tryout form.  NRP players will be contacted to pay for tryouts by other means.  If you intend to NRP with WMHA, please be sure to complete the form

  • Tryout schedule and pre tryout skate for travel players to be posted shortly.
    • These skates are intended to dust the rust for players who intend to tryout.
    • Start date Sept.7th.
    • Only players who have registered, purchased the tryout passport and filled out the intent to tryout are eligible.
  • U9-U11 will have 4 pre tryout skill sessions
  • U12-U18 will have 2 sessions

Our Tryout Process:

Windsor Minor is proud to support a tryout evaluation process that aims to remove the perceived “politics” out of our team selection.  Our selection process involves a committee of non-parental independent evaluators. This committee is made up of former NHL and OHL scouts, AAA and Junior coaches and former professional players.

This season we are offering pre tryout skates for our players trying out.  We will be offering 5 total tryouts per age group from U9 and up.  There will be 1 traditional skill/scrimmage and 4 exhibition games vs Tecumseh Eagles.

Important information to remember for your player who intends to tryout:

  • Players are to wear jerseys without names on the back (avoid wearing last year's travel jersey)
  • Parents are not to approach or attempt to discuss the tryouts with either the coaches or evaluation committee
  • All players are to attend each tryout session unless otherwise approved by the VP of Travel
  • NRP releases for players cut will be available after the 4th day of tryouts
We are working hard to provide the best possible return to hockey that we can, and we look forward to seeing you all competing at tryouts.

Kipp Van Kuren
VP of Travel
