Playdowns Round 2 Game #2 Windsor 3 Essex 4
Game 2 of the 6 point series took place in Essex and excitement was in the air. We were hoping to put in a strong performance and build some momentum but the Ravens had other ideas.
Period 1
The Junior spits came out hard but the Ravens matched intensity. The first shift indicated another hard fought contest but on the second shift Windsor left winger Kaleb Harway gets a break to the net and does not disappoint. Later in the period Renaud takes one home putting us up 2-0. Windsor gets a quick jump on the Ravens and t is looking like we may be taking this game to the bank.
Period 2
The Ravens are pushing and it is a competitive game. Windsor is getting some chances but Essex is playing us hard. A light shot from way back gets mishandled by our net minder and sneaks into the net. It looks like that was the momentum finder Essex needed.
Essex seems to have 3 men on the puck at all times and it is difficult to get momentum. Windsor is playing a bit of a sloppy game and the puck is fumbling around on their sticks. There is a face off in the Windsor zone and a scramble in front the net and it gets inside. Now it is all tied up!!! Later in the 3rd there is a face off in the Essex zone, Windsor wins the drop and sends it back to the defensemen for a booming shot but it goes wide and the defenseman tries to turn it around. As he turns an onrushing Essex forward steals it and has open ice to the goalie and buries one past the glove hand. WE ARE DOWN!! As the period ends we have 15 minutes to take over the game!!
PERIOD 3
What a fast paced game. Both team are pushing the puck into each others zone. Mosey one mans it up ice ignoring his forward. He has good speed and crosses the blue line, as he does he is challenged by an Essex defenseman almost losing it. He regains control and shoots his bazooka it hits the goalie and rolls into the net. TIE GAME!!!
Moments later Essex tosses a light one toward the goal. Our tender grabs it to halt play and one of our players swipes at it to clear it away. The puck is loose in front of the goal and tapped in by one of the Ravens. What awful luck!!
We are getting late into the period and though we are playing tough the Essex tender keeps them in with a few routine saves. Let in the period with 2 minute remain Windsor goes for broke. First a shot to the open left side of the Ravens net hits the outside post. Another shot hits the goalie and is pushed away. Later, a face off attempt got knocked in front and everyone scramble and the puck gets knocked away with 8 seconds left. Just as it looks like it is over Windsor manages to knock the puck the front of the net. Essex knocks it back to the stick of Muxlow with 2 seconds left and he shoots, it clears all the players in front of the net and heads for the top corner but hits the goalies shoulder and time runs out. WE LOSE!!!!!
WHAT A GAME!!! As bad as I feel I have the utmost respect for this Ravens team. The first game of the season was a 20-1 route and now we are in a dogfight. Good job Essex - you have made this a series to remember already!!
Now for our guys we had a sour taste of defeat and now our mettle will be tested. We are made of sterner stuff and will come back with intensity.
As coach Len said " did you boys think you were going to skirt all the way through this without a loss?" The good thing about disappointment is it teaches you to dig deeper, learn more and go to places you've not yet been to find success.
