We have some EXCITING news to share!
The Windsor Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors is thrilled to share some exciting news about the future of Travel Hockey in Southwestern Ontario. As many in our local minor hockey circles have heard, OMHA recently solicited applications for centers to apply for AA status with the intention of forming a South Western AA league.
WMHA is proud to announce, OMHA has approved our application to compete at the AA level beginning in the upcoming 2026/27 season. Windsor Minor will also continue to ice B-level teams across applicable age divisions, creating a complete and exciting competitive pathway for players at every stage. This advancement finally gives athletes in our area the opportunity to challenge themselves and consistently compete at a higher level.
Final OHF approval is pending and expected in January.
As many will remember, WMHA and other local centers were classified as AA in the not so distant past. You might find yourself asking, “What’s different now?”. There are two main factors that completely changed the game. One, the removal of residential boundaries prior to the 2025/26 season provided players the freedom to decide where they want to play. This new change along with open borders allows top athletes to play together, at an appropriate skill level. Two, the creation of an OMHA governed AA league. This means that Jr Spitfires players will consistently compete against AA competition for the entire season. Windsor is also the ONLY AA center in the Bluewater area creating a singular destination for players at this level.
This is a major step forward for not only WMHA, but all rep hockey in the Windsor-Essex area and we can’t wait to see Windsor Minor Hockey take the ice at this new level for the 2026/27 season! WMHA would like to extend a sincere thank you to the OMHA and specifically, our Regional Director, for their guidance through this process.
There will be many new and exciting changes and challenges that will accompany this development. More information on what our program will offer and how all this will work will be coming in the near future.
Questions can be directed to either WMHA President, Shannon Munson, WMHA VP, Doug Tellerd or WMHA VP of Travel, Frank Providenti.
