Home Opener - Effort makes the difference
The Atom AE Jr Spitfires welcomed the Tecumseh-Shoreline Eagles to Adie Knox Arena for the seasons home opener on Sunday September 11, 2016. It was all around a better game from the Spits even though they fell 5-3.
Caleb Whitson and Collin Williams split the game again and have both been playing well especially considering they have face more than twice the shots we have put on the opponents net. Ashton Maluske was able to put the first Spitfire goal of the season into the net after coming of the bench with fresh legs for Joey Vespa who had an amazing shift to get the puck into the Eagles zone and create the opportunity with linemates Cam Masse and Jordan Fry. We saw some great backchecking from Logan Conrod and linemate Jax Ackland. Combined with solid defensive play from Steven Thomas and Jack Vollans led the puck to be kept in the Eagles end leading to Maluske's second goal of the game. With goalie pulled and the game within reach Jeffery, Jakovic, Ackland, Fry, Masse and Vespa were out to try and get the man advantage goal. Unfortunately the Eagles capitalized on a bouncing puck an were able to put in the open net to make the score 5-2. The Spitfires didn't cave and earned their third goal of the game after a strong shift from Spadafora, Gelinas, Evanyk, Mosey and Ducharme that created the opportunity for Jorday Fry to put the puck between the pipes.
We saw a big difference in the effort out of each and every player especially during the first two periods. Now we are looking to push them to give the same sustained effort for the entire game.
With two practice between this game and when we see the Eagles again on Wednesday we will look to continue to push them to grow and develop and have fun playing this great game.
